Last Saturday a group of dedicated teachers came together to work with MACUL and ISTE teacher of the year, The Nerdy Teacher, Nick Provenzano. This was a highly anticipated event and Nick lived up to the hype by providing our teachers with inspiration, ideas, and tools to help them utilize chromebooks in their instruction in innovative ways.
Nick discussed 20 time, ted talks, blogs, twitter, and devices in the classroom. For me the biggest take away is that classrooms and students are no longer isolated. Through technology students now have the world as a resource AND an audience.
The nerdy teacher showed us how students can benefit from publishing their work on the internet. Not only does this higher level of accountability increase student performance but it also exposes them to unlimited additional feedback opportunities. For example, by using the hashtag #comments4kids when posting links to students' work on twitter, teachers can solicit THE WORLD for comments on their students' work. AMAZING!
Students can also share their work with like minded students across the country or the globe and connect with adults in their community and beyond who can serve as mentors or advisors to the project or learning process. The sky really is the limit now when it comes to students being able to connect with others.
I am so excited about our teachers' eagerness to embrace the ideas Nick discussed and I am excited about the future of South Haven Public Schools. Big things are happening and our students are going to really reap the benefits of a global education through technology.
